Decks

We construct decks of all types and sizes, from small porches to full wraparound decks with hot tub and railing.

Although we are happy to make your deck out of whatever decking material you prefer, we are currently recommending a Brazilian hardwood called palo ipe (shown at right, pronounced ee-pay) as the best decking material available. Palo ipe is a deep brown hardwood, incredibly strong, smooth, and durable, and offers numerous advantages. It is a beautiful wood with a rich texture, is almost completely free of knots, and is held down with a screwless fastening system for a perfectly smooth surface without screw holes, making it the most aesthetically pleasing decking material available. It is extremely tough and long-lasting, and is harvested sustainably in Brazil.

We can, of course, also make decks out of more traditional redwood, or using newer synthetic decking materials such as Trex. Below are some examples of decks we have made recently. Click on the thumbnails for a larger image.

Redwood Deck with Rail

This is a standard, mid-sized redwood deck with a railing. We also added a larger deck to the other side of this house, the substructure of which is shown below. We made the support structure out of pressure-treated wood for durability, and covered the tops of the joists and beams with tar paper to prevent water damage. This is a standard post-and-pier construction, with pads set in concrete and buried, supporting 4X4 posts which hold up the beams. This type of structure is solid, durable, and simple, and is used in most of our decks.

Low Redwood Deck Without Rail

This is a low redwood deck without a rail, constructed with a step around all sides for easy access. It was made with a post-and-pier structure like the deck above. We also remodeled the room adjacent to this deck, and replaced the siding, window, and door.

Redwood Porch

This small redwood porch is shown here during construction; in the later pictures it is finished except for the stairs. There was no railing. This simple structure replaced a smaller, old porch which had suffered extensive water damage.
