This is a standard, mid-sized redwood deck with a railing. We also added a larger deck to the other side of this house, the substructure of which is shown below. We made the support structure out of pressure-treated wood for durability, and covered the tops of the joists and beams with tar paper to prevent water damage. This is a standard post-and-pier construction, with pads set in concrete and buried, supporting 4X4 posts which hold up the beams. This type of structure is solid, durable, and simple, and is used in most of our decks.
